Light Up Your Life: Caran D'Ache Slim Lights Pen Collection
Writer, editor, publisher and fan of all things handwritten.
Caran d'Ache Slim Lights.
The Léman collection is one of my favorites among Switzerland-based Caran d'Ache's range of pen offerings. Its classic shape lends itself well to the dramatic color range for which it is known, in vivid lacquers that evoke neighboring Lake Geneva and its natural—and seasonal—surroundings.
All-lacquer or two-tone versions with metal caps are fashioned in a multitude of shades with names as sumptuous as the pens themselves, from deep Blue Night to Ebony Black, Saffron to Caviar. Fountain pens, rollerball pens, ballpoints and pencils are included, and each is produced at the Caran d'Ache atelier. And now, for the first time, Caran d'Ache is placing its decades-long expertise in engraving center stage in the collection, in the form of the new Léman Slim Lights.
Engraving
Engraving is just one of the many art forms for which Caran d'Ache is revered, and it is stunningly evident in many of the collections for which the company is best known, including the well-loved Ecridor and the newer Varius. This métier d'art requires practice and talent, both found among the artisans at Caran d'Ache who pride themselves on their craft.
Engraving has once again found the spotlight, this time in the Léman collection. The Léman Slim Lights is adorned with a baguette diamond guillochage "reminiscent of a dazzling jewel in all its glory," according the company.
Léman Slim Lights
The new pens are all about light: catching it, reflecting it and playing with it, thanks to a process similar to that used in jewelry making. The deep engraving and polishing reveals a new and dramatic aspect of the rhodium- and silver-coated body, thus the countless engraved prisms lend the appearance of a diamond. Caran d'Ache carries out this technique from start to finish in its own workshop—just as it designs and produces its other products in house.
While the Léman was first introduced over 20 years ago, Slim Lights is evidence of the collection's evolution and its propensity to grow to meet the needs and desires of Caran d'Ache fans around the globe. And just as the collection's color palette has broadened over the decades to include new trends and changing tastes, so, too, the inclusion of a metal pen that glitters like jewelry.
The Details
The just-introduced Léman Slim Lights is available as a fountain pen, rollerball pen and ballpoint pen. The cartridge- or converter-filled fountain pen's nib is 18-karat gold with rhodium coating, available in fine, medium and broad sizes. The pen's slim body is rhodium- and silver-coated, as is the clip, and the Caran d'Ache logo is engraved on the ring.
And while Caran d'Ache is obviously driven by the aesthetics and quality of its products, the company also takes concern for the environment very seriously. It has placed sustainable development at the heart of its philosophy and incorporates environmental performance into its production procedures, specifically in its use of solar energy and by recycling waste products. It is also committed to providing teachers with art training and supports young talent in both the cultural and artistic arenas. I like that as much as I like its pens.
